Thailand Visas: Setting the Record Straight 4: Visas Definitions
February 1 2010 Categories: Thailand Visas, Thailand Visas & Work Permit No comments yet
This post is a continuation of our series Thailand Visas: Setting the Record Straight. I wrote this series with a “back-to-basics” kind of approach because I don’t believe that it is possible to understand Thai immigration regulations without having first an understanding of basic terms such as visa, visa class, visa exemption, passport stamp, entry visa, departure visa, multi or single entry and so on…
I would recommend readers to first read the 3 first posts of the series before to read this one

TERMS |
SPECIFICS |
REMARKS |
| Visa | See: Thailand Visas: Setting the Record Straight (2) | |
| Visa Exemption | ||
| Issuing Authority | ||
| Type of Visa or Visa Class | See: Thailand Visas: Setting the Record Straight (2) | |
| Multi or Single Entries | ||
| Passport Stamp | ||
| Entry Stamp | ||
| DURATION OF STAY:The maximum duration you may legally extend your stay into Thailand without applying for an extension or leaving the country
The Duration of Stay is mentioned on your Entry Stamp. In some countries the entry stamp contains a mention of how long you can stay. In Thailand the period of stay is the period between the date of entry and the departure date as mentioned on your Entry Stamp The departure date is the last day of the period of stay |
Visa Waiver/ExemptionPhor 30 or Phor Phor 30
Duration of stay: - First entry: 30 days - Subsequent entry: 30 days if travelling by plane no limits as to the number of trips Phor 30: 15 days travelling by road from neighbouring country. maximum 4 trips by bus. Phor Phor 30: travelling by bus 30 days Phor Phor 90 Duration of stay: First entry: 90 days Subsequent entries: 90 days no limit as to number of successive entries |
Extension at Immigration:Maximum 7 days |
| Tourist Visa:Duration of stay
From 30 to 60 days: Note there is a crackdown on back to back tourist visas issued in neighboring countries. Consulate are requested to check more carefully the purpose of visit and to reject abusive request |
Extension at Immigration: Maximum 30 days:
Total period of stay may not exceed 90 days from first day. |
|
| Non Immigrant Visa:Duration of stay
Maximum : 90 days
|
Extension at Immigration : From 60,90,120,180 to one year
Depending of the type of visa |
|
| OVERSTAY:
Means to stay in Thailand beyond the maximum Departure Date mentioned on the Entry Stamp To be in Overstay means that one presence in Thailand has become ILLEGAL
|
Because the Immigration policy is to allow people that overstay their visa to pay a fine of 500 THB per day and a maximum of 1000 THB many foreign tourist think that Overstay is allowed. This is wrong Overstay IS ILLEGAL Do Not Use it Lightly |
To be controlled by Thai Police or arrested by while in Overstay may be a very painful experience. A foreigner in Overstay may be detained by immigration police and eventually deported after having been sentenced |
Tomorrow we will continue our visas serie.
