Doing Business in Thailand

Bangkok Post today published an interesting story about a recent Abac survey about Thai women and gambling .More than 60% of the women questioned in the survey admitted to having placed bets on football, the pollster reported on Friday, just hours before the 2012 European football championship kicked off.

Out of 1000 women surveyed 62.5% of the respondents admitted they gambled even though they were aware it was illegal and could create social problems. Abac said 40.6% of those saying they gambled were less than 20 years of age and 75% in formal employment.

Of course having been in Thailand since 15 years I did not need a pool to remind me of this problem but the fact is that it is useful information for the newbie’s. And to warn you even further let me tell you the story of one of my fortunate client that had no family home and decided to make a will in favor of his Thai girlfriend.

Now this young maiden had a gambling problem and found herself in needs of cash to settle her gambling debt and she could not ask her boyfriend for help. After all her mother cannot be hospitalized every week and the brother cannot have a bike accident every month.

So she decided to go see a loan shark and brought the will with her to show her worth. Not a reassuring move for the boy friend
