Here we are again, the Global Corruption Index results for 2011 are out again. Thailand is ranking 78 in the company of Chian ans with a score of 3.5 only (out of 10) that is to say a score far below than the average 5 mark.
In the graphic I extracted the results of Asian countries only. Singapore and Hong Kong are the cleanest economy in Asia with respective ranking of 1 (9.3 points) and 13 (8.4). A good mark to Japan ranked 17 at (7.8).
Besides this the least we can say is that Asia is not doing so well and countries like Thailand and China really needs to make an effort to improve their ranking.
Of course Thailand bad scoring is relative. Indeed by experience i know that it is possible for a businessman to start a business, obtain a business license, obtain a work permit and a one year visa without having to pay one Thai Baht of corruption money. Basically corruption is needed in Thailand whenever someone wants an advantage that could not otherwise be obtained. In other words it is not as bad as in other countries where a business cannot be managed without paying corruption money at every step.
Still as Thailand score so well on the World Bank Ease of Doing Business survey an improvement on the corruption ranking could only make Thailand an even better place to do business
