Thailand Outlook: 2010 a year of recovery or danger?
February 1 2010 Categories: Doing Business In Thailand No comments yet
This morning was published Thailand economic forecasts for 2010. According the Fiscal Policy Office, Thai Economy will rebound next year with a growth of 3.5% next year. Not as good as the growth forecasts for other Asian countries but not so bad country that has been trough 3 years of political crisis and a world economic crisis.
As much as I would like to end the year on this positive note and tell you all that next year is the year to invest into Thailand another new dampened my optimist.
General Prem Tinsulanonda a former Thai Prime Minister and current President of the Privy Council (the Privy Council is body of appointed advisors that advises the King of Thailand) was (according to the Bangkok Post) recently quoted as recommending to Thailand military’s top brass to read an article published in Naew Na a Thai language daily paper which headline read “we are in a period of civil war” In a nutshell this article says that Thailand may be in the initial stages of a civil war as a result of the political turmoil.
For those looking for symbols or subliminal messages evoking what will happen next General Prem appeared in his military uniform during a gathering at his house yesterday. According to the Bangkok Post last time General Prem was seen in his military uniform was in August 2006 that is to say one month before the latest coup.
My power of foresight being very limited I do not have a clue what to think about those latest events but one thing is certain as I mentioned in my previous post . The first two months of 2010 will be full of dangers with the Taksin Asset Case and the Democrat Party possible dissolution case (please see my post the Stuff Hit the Fan). Those two cases are a powder keg that would suffice to initiate more turmoil’s and in this context General Prem latest remarks and fashion statement do not bode well.
