In today and tomorrow post I will comment on the Global Corruption Barometer 2009 just published by the World Bank. Overall, 70 countries were surveyed, 12 of which are Asian countries (Brunei, Cambodia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea).

Note: This post is not entirely new. This subject was first posted as a Page called “Nominee Issue”. I’m about to modify the look of the blog and decided that some of the subjects discussed in pages would now be treated as posts. Of course I updated the content of this post to reflect the current situation.
The “Thai Nominee” issue is the more acute problem of foreign investment in Thailand and we will discuss here the many aspects of this problem.

Many foreign buyers are considering leasing land and houses for non commercial purpose because Thai laws prohibit foreign investors to purchase land. Now while it has become fashionable to purchase 90 years lease agreements (30+30+30) the fact is that this kind of scheme raise many legal issues. I told my business owners clients that this year would be a bad one for all of us not only because we have to survive amid the context of the global economic downturn and the political crisis but also because economical crisis’s do not only affect companies they also affect the Thai Revenue Department and this year was a bad one for the Revenue Department with collections that will fall short of the target by Bt170 billion (first estimation was a shortfall of 300 billions) THB.

It is always difficult for a new buyer freshly arrived on a market to make an informed decision on what and where to buy? I have been around for 12 years, believe that I have a good understanding of the market but still I learn new things every day. Should you trust your agent to recommend you the best product available. You may, of course but you could also try to find out for yourself what the situation is.

The education visa is the visa granted to foreign citizens who want to pursue studies in Thailand.
This type of visa covers the cases of enrollment in a government educational institution or in a private educational institution (High School or University) and is also available to foreign citizen that whishes to conduct training or research into a university or research institute.

A personal story for once. I’m a bit scatterbrained and I lost my ipad. Of course i did not activate cloud and the locate my ipad application so there was no way to know where i lost it or to find it. I was quite upset about it as i just bought it two months ago. I thought it was lost for good.

Thailand foreign land ownership policy is often criticized by foreign buyers and to make their point the critics often refer to other countries in Asia that allows foreign land ownership. The message being Thailand should change its policy and allows foreigners to own land because otherwise Thailand will be at risk to see buyers going to purchase in Asian countries that have more opens policies in this regard. I think that those critics are unfair to Thailand and I will explain why in this post

One of the interesting aspects of blogging is that I can see the Google searches that bring readers to my blog. Today a reader had a query which read “how to efficiently bribe Thai Police?”. Now, I don’t know about you but when I read this kind of query I cannot help but guess that someone is in trouble and expect to get out of it through the help of a bribe.
