What is “Thainess”

In a nutshell “Thainess” is a concept that provides the foundation for social harmony and the respect of order in a patriarchal, hierarchical society where people display cool heads, warm hearts, gratitude and public deference.

“Thainess” has a lot of by-products that we will discuss from time to time in this blog.

Global Peace Indicator – Thailand Ranking

April 20 2012 Categories: Thailand Business, Understanding Thailand No comments yet

I have always considered Thailand a safe country by comparison to other countries, indeed it is still possible to walk on the street without having to be affraid of being victime of an agression. While i felt at peace in Thailand the fact is that it is not as peaceful as I believed which is why I’m very surprised to see that it fairs so badly in the Global Peace Index. With a ranking of 107 out of 153 countries surveyed the least we can say is that Thailand is not as “peaceful” as it seems. And this was the 2011 ranking. Not sure how much the degradation of the situation in the south of Thailand will affect Thailand ranking in next year ranking

Are Thai employees reliable?

Absolutely, however, as with everything there are always exceptions but if, you treat your Thai employees well and with respect, you will notice that they will give you the loyalty that you do not expect to find anymore. They will be hard working and, committed; they will protect your interests and the interests of your company as if it were theirs. Over time the company will become a second family for them up to the point where you will see an employee in tears informing you that she is leaving your company for a new job. Such moments, are a real reward.

Understanding Thailand: The Somtam Effect

April 19 2012 Categories: Understanding Thailand No comments yet

In Thailand, there is a “little something” in the air, I can’t point exactly what it is maybe too much somtam (local spicy papaya salad) or Singha (local beer) but from time to time an ordinary person will lose all focus and reason and over a few years will go from the status of a respected professional to a pitied fool.

Getting married in Thailand? That will be a life-changing decision for the better (hopefully) or the worth (it can also happen). Now that you are getting married will come the time where you will be requested to honor the Thai Tradition of the Dowry system. While in European culture the dowry is more something that has to be paid or provided for by the family of the future wife in Thailand the dowry has to be paid by the groom.
